Spied by a traditional telescope, the galaxy PKS 2014−55 is an unremarkable smudge of vibrant gentle. However look once more in radio wavelengths, and you will see that the galaxy is hiding a gargantuan, glowing treasure at its heart — and X marks the spot.

PKS 2014−55 is an X-shaped radio galaxy (XRG), an uncommon kind of galaxy that appears like an infinite X within the evening sky when imaged in radio wavelengths. The lengthy arms of the X — every one about 100 instances longer than the Milky Way — are literally a blazing-fast soup of particles and magnetic fields, blasted out of the galaxy’s central black hole and touring for hundreds of thousands of light-years into area, far past the galaxy’s edge.
