Newfound Comet Leonard will blaze into view this year

A brand new comet is on its approach in towards the solar, with prospects that it might turn into vivid sufficient to see with the unaided eye by 12 months’s finish. 

The thing in query is Comet Leonard, catalogued C/2021 A1 and was found by astronomer Gregory J. Leonard on Jan. three on the Mount Lemmon Observatory, also referred to as the Mount Lemmon Infrared Observatory. The observatory is situated on Mount Lemmon within the Santa Catalina Mountains, roughly 17 miles (28 kilometers) northeast of Tucson, Arizona. Mr. Leonard is a senior analysis specialist for the observatory’s Lunar and Planetary Laboratory’s Catalina Sky Survey
