Each spring the solar shines on the aspect of the stack of layers on the North Pole of Mars often known as the north polar layered deposits. The heat destabilizes the ice and blocks break unfastened.

After they attain the underside of the greater than 500 meter tall cliff face, the blocks kick up a cloud of mud. (Within the cutout, the highest layer of the north polar cap is to the decrease left.) The layers beneath are totally different colours and textures relying on the quantity of mud combined with ice.
